+ DESCRIPTION
Looking to construct a mixed-use multifamily building along Front St, the owners sought to create a five-story, thirty-two-unit structure engaging the surrounding context while maintaining an identity of its own. Initial planning exercises suggested the preservation of the street by holding the building’s edge along Front St. and placing the rear mass along the northern property line for open area, solar, and view considerations.
Paralleling the materiality and rhythm found along Front St. the front façade is comprised of bricks arranged into orderly bays spanning the width of the site. A roof deck subtracts a portion of the building’s mass at the rear, with one wall angled allowing sightlines to Center City. This angled geometry presents itself at the front of the building, breaking the order of the façade to create an entry for the residents.
